New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has decided to end the investigation into the sensational Hadiya case.
The NIA move comes as there is no evidence to prove that that the 25-year-old Kerala woman was forcibly converted to Islam, Manorama News reported Thursday. The NIA also took into consideration the fact that even the Supreme Court had agreed to her wedding with Shafin Jahan.
The investigation had revealed that certain groups were involved in conversions in Kerala but there was no proof that it was a forcible conversion. The central agency had probed 11 cases but was not able to collect substantial evidence or witness statements to prove the conversion allegations.
The apex court had in August 2017 asked the NIA to probe the case of conversion and marriage of Hadiya aka Akhila, as the agency claimed a 'pattern' was emerging in Kerala.
The Kerala High Court had in May 2017 annulled the marriage and sent the woman to her parents' custody, following which Jahan had approached the apex court.
On November 27, 2017, the apex court had freed Hadiya from her parents' custody and sent her to college to pursue her studies, even as she had pleaded that she should be allowed to go with her husband.
