Bindu enters world of letters in style

Angamaly: Bindu Bhaskar, who is paraplegic by birth, is on cloud nine as her long-cherished dream to read and write has come true, thanks to 'Aksharalaksham,' a literacy project launched by the Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority to achieve complete literacy in the State.

For the past 39 years, Bindu has been confined to her home because of her physical disabilities and never got an opportunity to go to school. The block panchayat authorities came to know about Bindu’s illiteracy after a survey conducted under the ‘Aksharalaksham’ project.

Malayatoor-native Bindu was taught to read and write at her home by Malayatoor panchayat literacy official Lilly Jose. Now, Bindu can read and write Malayalam with ease and has also cleared the 'Aksharalaksham' examination. She wants to continue her studies and has enrolled herself for the fourth-standard equivalent examination of the literacy mission.

Bindu, whose father is no more, is totally dependent on her mother Bhavani who is running a small shop at her home to sustain the small family.

Bindu received the literacy mission certificate from Roji M John, MLA. As many as 141 people, who took the exams in 12 centres, from Karukutty, Mookanur, Thuravur, Mangapra, Aiyappuzha, Malayatoor, Kalady and Kangur panchayats coming under the Angamaly block panchayat were also given the certificates at a function here.

The function was presided over by Block panchayat president P T Paul. Former PSC chairman Dr K S Radhakrishnan, Fisat chairman Paul Mundadan, Block panchayat vice-president Valsa Xavier, Karukutty panchayat president Shaju V Thekekkara and Block Skills Excellence Centre convener T M Varghese spoke on the occasion.
