All-party meet held to restore peace after CPM-BJP clashes

Kozhikode: Representatives from across political parties as well as government officials on Friday held an all-party gathering at Kuttiady in a bid to bring back peace in the region, which is notorious for frequent clashes between CPM and BJP workers. Violence erupted again recently after CPM Kozhikode area secretary P Mohanan's son and daughter-in-law were attacked during a hartal on November 17.

Several houses belonging to the followers of both the parties were attacked in a series of violence that started from the day of the hartal which was announced after the arrest of Hindu Aikyavedi leader K P Sasikala. BJP had also backed the general strike.

The violence spread to neighbouring areas after the couple was attacked twice on the hartal day. RSS workers were booked in the case and as a counter attack, the houses of the accused were targeted. The violence erupted in Kuttiady spread to Perambra and Nadapuram also.

On Friday, local politicians led by Kunnummal block panchayat president K Sajith visited the houses that were attacked. The delegation also comprised Kuttiady panchayat president Balakrishnan C N, Kunnummal panchayat president KP Rajan, Kuttiady inspector of police N Sunil Kumar, K K Suresh (CPM), K G Radhakrishnan, K Chandramohan (CPI), P K Suresh, Sreejesh Oorath (Congress), Abdu Rahiman, O C Kareem (IUML) and M M Radhakrishnan (BJP). They also visited other areas that saw violence.

The leaders were accompanied by village and revenue officials. They called for the need to retain peace in the area and not to resort to violence under any provocation. They visited the houses of K P Gireesan, Erathu Sudheesh and M P Ramesh which were attacked. However, nobody has been arrested in the house attack cases yet.
