Thiruvananthapuram: Six police personnel who are accused in the custodial death of Varappuzha resident Sreejith have been reinstated in service. The officers are CI Crispin Sam, SI Deepak, ASI Janadhanan, senior civil police officer Santhosh Baby and civil police officers Sreeraj and Sunil Kumar.
The recommendation for their reinstatement was issued by the Crime Branch. The order signed by IG Vijay Sakhare says that the accused police officers are being reinstated as the investigation into the murder has been completed.
All the officers except Crispin Sam have been posted in Ernakulam Rural and have been directed to report before the District Police Chief. Sam has been asked to reach the police headquarters.
Eleven police officers, including former Rural SP A V George, were suspended as part of departmental action in the Sreejith custodial death case. Nine among them are accused in the case. They have been charged with torturing Sreejith to death after taking him into custody at 10.30 pm on April 6, 2018 in connection with an attack on the house of one Vasudevan at Varappuzha.

Sreejith’s arrest was recorded only by 9.15 pm next day. He was admitted to hospital without being presented before the magistrate.
There was another case against the inspector, who is the sixth accused, regarding alleged forging of records to show that Sreejith was arrested earlier.
A probe conducted later found that Sreejith died due to injuries suffered during torture in the lock-up.
