Ras Al-Khaimah, UAE: The husband of a Malayali woman, who died in a road accident in Ras Al-Khaimah, was reportedly made to pay 2 lakh dirhams (about Rs 38 lakh) as compensation to the victim's family.

Divya, the daughter of Sankaran Bhattathiri and Jalaja from Nileshwar in Kasaragod district, died after the car she was travelling in smashed against a sign board in the wee hours of Sunday. Her husband Praveen and son Dakshin escaped unhurt. The family was on their way back from a Thiruvathira festival in Sharjah. According to local media reports, her husband drove the car at the time of the accident.

Praveen, an Ottapalam native, was penalised after he admitted that he dozed off just before the accident. The attorney general ordered him to pay the compensation to his wife's family and pay a fine of 2,500 dirhams.

The money was raised from relatives and friends, a social worker involved in the case said. The volunteer, Raghu, also said that an insurance claim would be made after the police submit their report in the court.

Her body was flown to her native town in Kerala on Wednesday and cremated at Ivor Madom, Thrissur.

Meanwhile, numerous videos are circulating on social media that claim to be the visuals of the accident. However, the family members clarified that these videos were fake and said such instances were extremely disheartening.
