Chennai: Eminent Malayalam filmmaker and chairman of the Kerala Film Development Corporation, Lenin Rajendran, on Monday died at a private hospital here following liver related ailments, hospital sources said.
Rajendran, 67, recently underwent liver transplantation surgery.
He died at 8.45 pm, the sources said.
Rajendran's body will be taken to Thiruvananthapuram by a flight scheduled to arrive at 5.30 pm on Tuesday. The body will be taken to his residence at Pandit Colony from the airport.
The body will be kept at KSFDC Kalabhavan Theatre from 10 am on Wednesday for the public to pay last respects. The final rites will be held at 2 pm at Thycaud Santhikavadam.
Known for his unique style of filmmaking, Rajendran had entered tinsel town by directing the movie 'Venal' during the early 1980s.
A multiple state award winner, Rajendran helmed a number of critically acclaimed movies including "Swathi Thirunal", "Daivathinte Vikrithikal", "Mazha", "Kulam" and "Idavapathi".
Known for his commitment to the Leftist ideology, Rajendran had unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha polls in 1991 against K R Narayanan.
He is survived by wife Dr Ramani daughter Dr Parvathy and son Gauthaman.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condoled the death of Rajendran.
