Preferential treatment to Kodi Suni irks fellow inmates
Currently, the police are investigating his involvement in a number of crimes, that are believed to be hatched by Kodi Suni from the jail and carried out with the help of quotation gangs operating out of north Malabar.

Thrissur: N K Sunil Kumar aka Kodi Suni, one of the life convicts in the murder of Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) leader TP Chandrasekharan, has allegedly been accorded special privileges at the Viyyur Central Jail.

Suni, who was arrested recently for abducting a youth and extorting money from him while he was out on parole last year, has been lodged alone in a cell where five prisoners could be accommodated. Some of the prison officials are said to be making arrangements for him to plan and execute quotation works from the jail.

Inmates at the central prison are employed in various jobs. Although Suni’s name figures in the registry of prisoners assigned to work in the farm on the jail premises, he stays away from such works. However, he has been receiving a monthly salary ranging between Rs 3,000-4,000 without breaking a sweat. He would never go to the guard officer to mark his attendance, but the jail authorities would ensure that the daily pay of Rs 127 is given to him without any fail, sources in the jail revealed.

Currently, the police are investigating his involvement in a number of crimes, that are believed to be hatched by him from the jail and carried out with the help of quotation gangs operating out of north Malabar. It includes a case pertaining to robbing smuggled gold from a car.

Over the past few months, Suni has allegedly made over hundred calls from the jail. The prison officials who are hand in glove with him would make sure that his mobile phone never runs out of power by providing him fully charged batteries at regular intervals. There are clear indications that the plot to kidnap a native of Kaithery in Kannur district was devised inside the jail.

Complaining of preferential treatment to Suni, the other inmates say that the quantity of food specified in the jail menu is not applicable to him. On days when chicken and fish are served as per the menu, specially prepared food would be sent to Suni’s cell by the officers.

There were several reports on the functioning of a racket, with the connivance of jail guards, which supplies banned items to inmates on request. A few months ago, the jail authorities had suspended a number of officers after they were caught red-handed while attempting to smuggle liquor into the cells where the convicts in the T P Chandrasekharan murder case, including Suni, were housed.
