Kottiyam (Kollam): A farmer collapsed and died on the field apparently due to sunstroke.
Rajan Nair (63), a native of Nedumbana panchayat, had died while working on the field. He was the president of the Ilavoor paadasekhara samiti.
Rajan was found lying unconscious on the field, by a passerby at 12.15 noon, on Saturday. Though he tried to shake Rajan up a few times, the latter didn’t respond.
His relatives were informed immediately. Though Rajan was rushed to the hospital by the relatives who came to the spot, the doctors declared him dead. The doctors had said that Rajan had died around half an hour before he was brought to the hospital.
The initial reports suggest that he had died due to sunstroke. The skin on his forehead, neck, hands and legs were burned. Hours later, these blemishes began to get darker.
Meanwhile, DMO Dr VV Shirley said that only autopsy could confirm if the farmer died due to sunstroke.
Sunstroke or heatstroke is brought about by excessive exposure to the sun.
Rajan grew tapioca on the land owned by his neighbour. Usually he is accompanied by his brother to the field. However,on the fateful day, he decided to work at the field all by himself. He had even carried enough drinking water with him.
Indira is his wife. Ajith and Arya are his children.
