Kalavoor: The rural hamlet of Kavungal here in Alappuzha district is turning into a “Doctors' village” with seven youngsters from the area having passed the MBBS this year.
Kavungal was last in the news when it achieved the rare milestone of having at least one government official in 90 per cent of its houses. Incidentally, most of them were with the police department.
What is also interesting here is that the seven new MBBS graduates hail from houses located in a two-kilometer radius of the famed Kavungal temple, an area which was once considered backward.
The villagers were able to rewrite their history after a few of them decided to open a free public service commision (PSC) exam trainig center. A lot of the candidates who attended training here went on to secure government jobs. Those who did secure government jobs began helping the others to climb up the social ladder, first by attempting the PSC exam. Soon, Kavungal village flaunted a long list of government employees.
Most of the new doctors from Kavungal had managed merit seats for their MBBS course, their ordinary family backgrounds never a hindrance.
The MBBS graduates are Kavya, daughter of MV Subhash of Viswa Bhavan, Kavungal who studied at Kottayam Medical College; Arunima, daughter of TC Gopi, who did MBBS at Malabar Medical College; Gopalakrishna, son of CP Sivaprasad of Sreevalsam, who did the course at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College; Rasa Murad, son of retired assistant development commissioner Khalid Muhammed, who was a student at Ernakulam Medical College; Anwar Shah, son of Noushad Moulavi of Zeenath Manzil, who did his course at Al Azhar Medical College, Thodupuzha and Shimna Shams, daughter of Illathuveli Shamsul Huda, who studied at Ernakulam Medical College.
