Kozhikode: For several years an annual count of students in government schools in Kerala is followed to primarily ascertain whether there is enough strength to run them amid financial stress the governments face regularly. Teachers go to great lengths to retain or add to the student strength so that their jobs are not at stake. Now, strict instructions have been passed on to government schools, asking them not to reveal the data on student head count.

The data on the number of students are being submitted online this year. All the data should be submitted by 1pm on Monday via 'Samboorna' software.

The instruction was given to DEOs (District Educational Officer), AEOs (Assistance Educational Officers) and DDE (Deputy Director of Education).

The in-charge of the Directorate of Public Instruction (DPI) has ordered that the data should not be revealed to any outside agency without his approval.

The collected data will be send to the DPI by 3pm. The statistical wing of the general education department will then evaluate these and submit for the approval of the DPI, the order has stated.

Earlier the practice was to give the data from schools to sub-district, district officials and then to the general education department. The numbers were taken on the sixth working day after the school reopens and the AEOs and DEOs handed over the total numbers to their respective district offices.
