Thiruvananthapuram: The mysterious disappearance of German woman Lisa Weise in Kerala, a year after the brutal murder of the Latvian woman in the state capital, is raising serious questions about the safety of foreign women coming to the state.

“When she failed to contact us on her birthday, we were worried," said Karolin Heling, Lisa's sister, while confiding to the sister of the Latvian victim.

Karolin provided more inputs about her missing sister to provide clarity in the case.

Lisa travelled to Kerala in search of peace. She had no details about Lisa's British friend Muhammad Ali, who had also reached Kerala along with her, Karolin added.

The revelations were made during a video call with the Latvian victim's sister.

The latter enquired about Lisa to Karolin with the help of an interpreter as she was not fluent in English.

Adopts new faith

Lisa converted into Islam eight years ago while she was in Egypt. During her travels through Islamic pilgrimage sites, she met Abd al Rahman Hashim and married him.

They settled in America and had two children. Lisa later got divorced and returned to Germany in 2016.

She had distanced herself from her family until then. Her family was unsupportive when she converted to Islam. After her return to Europe, she stayed in Berlin and somewhere in Sweden for two years, Karolin revealed.

Her kids were taken back to the United States by their paternal grandmother during the period.

Lisa was not fine

Lisa was mentally distraught after this, Karolin added.

She was depressed owing to failures in the paths she had pursued. The decision to visit Amritapuri, a Hindu spiritual retreat centre in Kerala, was taken as a result.

Lisa had informed her sister about her trip to India along with the British citizen. She reached India, seeking peace, her distraught sister stated.

Though Amritapuri in Kollam was marked as destination in travel documents, preliminary probe revealed that she has not reached there as a guest.

She had visited Kerala earlier also and had stayed at Amritapuri Ashram for two months in 2011.

Lisa still in India?

The police have confirmed that Lisa has not flown out of India after checking the travel details at various airports. The police suspect that she is still in India. The Kerala cops would issue a lookout notice and hand it over to the police of other states.

As the German consulate has intervened in the issue, the DGP has instructed the police officers to consider the case an international issue. However, the Kerala cops could only ascertain that she reached Thiruvananthapuram on March 7. So far they have not secured any other conclusive information.

Last contacts

Lisa had spoken to her family on March 5 and March 10. She had video-called her children in the US on March 5 and informed them that she was travelling to Kerala and she would call them after three weeks. Her mother said that Lisa sounded very happy when she called her on March 10 and told her that she was in India.

However, since then there has been no information about Lisa.
