Thiruvananthapuram: The police have said that the attack on a student at the University College in the Kerala capital was a planned move.

The FIR stated that a volatile situation was created to attack students who opposed the office-bearers of the Students' Federation of India (SFI)'s college unit. The students, including the injured Akhil – a third-year political science student, were provoked to create tension in the campus.

Narrating the incident at the college on Friday, the FIR said that SFI members Nasim and Amal held on to the victim as SFI unit president Shivaranjith stabbed Akhil with a murderous cry.

Meanwhile, the police have not been able to trace those accused of murder attempt, including Shivaranjith. It is suspected that they have fled the district. The cops have also warned that those who tried to protect them would also be named as accused.

Students, who were witness to the attack, have given statement to the police that SFI leader Shivaranjith had stabbed Akhil, also a local committee member of the Attukal SFI.

The students said that a knife with unit member Nasim was used to stab Akhil.

Accused SFI leaders absconding

Even a day after a student was stabbed in front of hundreds of students at a college in the heart of the Kerala capital, the police have not been able to nab the accused.

The police have said that the accused SFI leaders have gone into hiding.

The cops have slapped attempt to murder charges on six, including SFI unit secretary A N Nasim and president Shivaranjith. The accused had spent nearly an hour in the campus after the stabbing incident.

However, eyewitnesses said more than 20 people were involved in the attack. SFI workers Haider and Nandakishore, who are not students at the college, also led the attack, it was said.

Accused on PSC list for cops?

It was also found that SFI leaders Shivaranjith and Nasim, prime accused in the case, are also on the PSC rank list and are awaiting call to be police constables. It was alleged that the criminal background of Nasim, who was earlier accused of attacking a cop, was overlooked and he made it to the 28th rank on the list due to CPM influence. Efforts are also on the help him in this case, it was said.

The SFI is the students’ wing of the ruling CPM in Kerala.

The assault room of the SFI?

Students claimed that the union office at the University College functioned as SFI’s assault room. Lethal weapons were allegedly stored here.

A classmate of Akhil told Manorama News that students supporting other outfits were threatened and taken to participate in CPM programmes.

The classmate further alleged that even the future of those students who opposed the SFI at the University College would be destroyed.

"Goons from outside the campus also interfere in assault incidents. Students are often forced to boycott classes to take part in CPM's party events and even teachers support this," the student said.
