Sajen did not kill self over family problems, avers Kannur police chief

Kannur: The suicide of businessman Sajen Parayil a couple of months ago had raised a furore in the political circles even as a probe was under way what exactly drove him to suicide.

Meanwhile, his family was subjected to a vilification campaign allegedly by CPM workers whose civic leaders were blamed for delaying municipal documents pertaining to Sajen' dream project, a convention centre at Anthoor here in Kerala's Kannur district.

Now, in a letter to Sajen's wife Beena, the Kannur district police chief has stated that Sajen did not commit suicide over family problems. He also dubbed smear campaigns in this regard as false and that the cops had no role in spreading such rumours.

District police chief Pratheesh Kumar, however, said the police has not received any evidence to back the allegation that Sajen killed himself due to the harassment of Anthoor municipality chairperson P K Shyamala and other officials.

Sajen was allegedly depressed over not getting the ownership certificate for his building from the CPM-ruled municipality.

Beena had filed a complaint to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the police about the reports that appeared in the CPM's party newspaper and social media against the family. in his reply to Beena has dismissed the reports in the party mouthpiece.

Sajen, the 49-year-old businessman who had returned from Nigeria, had committed suicide in mid-June, apparently over his failure to obtain ownership certificate for a convention centre he had built at Anthoor after investing over Rs 16 crore.

What the letter said

All the documents related to the Sajen's Partha convention centre were seized from the Anthoor municipality and examined. However, no evidence emerged that warrantied a probe against anyone, the cop said in the letter. None of Sajen's family members or other witnesses gave statement that family problems led to suicide. The officers never made any false deductions that could have maligned Sajen and his family at any point in the investigation, the letter said.

The district police chief also said that the cops did not have any role in the reports spread by media.

The media did not receive such information from the probe officers. Some media houses were fabricating fake news based on hearsay and their own imagination. The probe so far has been impeccable, the senior cop said.

Meanwhile, the probe conducted by a special team on Sajen's death would be completed this week. The police have filed a case of unnatural death. The probe report would be submitted to the Revenue Divisional Officer, Taliparamba.
