Dubai: Thushar Vellappally, the Kerala convenor of the National Democratic Alliance, has been asked to cough up Rs 6 crore by his former business associate Nasil Abdullah to settle the Rs 19 crore cheque-default case in the United Arab Emirates. However, Thushar has offered to pay up only Rs 3 crore. The deal was discussed during talks held through mediators.

Meanwhile, reports say Thushar was trying to ease the strict bail terms by submitting the passport of an Emirati in the court.

The fresh efforts by the businessman-cum-politician to get the travel ban revoked come at a time when discussions carried out within and outside the court failed to yield any positive result. Thushar is likely to file a plea in the court on Tuesday in this regard.

The Ajman court had on Thursday granted him bail on the condition that he should not leave the country until the hearing is over or both the parties reach a settlement outside the court.

Thushar was arrested last week in Ajman in connection with a cheque bounce case.

However, Thushar has got legal advice that he could leave the country on the personal guarantee of a UAE national. He now plans to transfer the power of attorney of the case to his Emirati friend and submit it in the court.

However, the court will only accept the passport of a UAE national who could take over the financial liabilities in the absence of Thushar.

In case he is able to leave the UAE on the guarantee of an Emirati, Thushar needs to visit the UAE only when the court summons him for the hearing and other proceedings. But if Thushar fails to turn up, the guarantor will be held responsible.

Besides a personal guarantor, Thushar will have to provide a surety for a higher amount.

NRI business baron M A Yusuff Ali had reportedly played a key role in getting bail for Thushar.
