Stone age burial urn
Burial urn unearthed from a residential plot near Santhanpara

Nedumkandam: A year after memorials likely belonging to the Stone Age were discovered near Santhanpara in Idukki district, two burial urns of the same period have been unearthed from a residential plot near here.

The latest archaeological find was made as soil was being removed to rebuild a sheep stable on the premises of a house near Chembakappara High School at Kamakshi area.

As soon the urns were noticed, the workers took care to avoid damage to them.

Both urns measured four feet in height when taken out of the earth intact. They have the colour of red soil.

The urns contained some bone fragments.

The property belongs to Shajan of Kochukunnel House.

Several dolmens (megalithic tombs) were found in the area earlier, Shajan noted.

The urns were later examined by the authorities from Nedumkandam Archaeology and History Protection Committee. According to historians, the finding of bone fossils is a major development as advanced DNA tests now available could shed more light on the region’s past as well as lead to significant breakthroughs in archaeology.

Last year many tall upright stones (menhirs) were found on a 10-acre area on a hill slope near Santhanpara.

Nedumkandam too is close by, about 30 km from Santhanpara.
