Bedridden child artist seeks aid to draw again
It took some more weeks for Samika to regain her memory and relish the first prize.

Ponnani: Six-year-old Samika has won the first prize in a painting competition and wishes to create more pieces of art but needs society’s help for the purpose. The young girl is now bedridden following a road accident that took place at Chamravattom Junction in December last year.

Samika was walking home from school along with her aunt and two brothers when a speeding car hit all of them. While her aunt succumbed to injuries three days after the accident, the brothers escaped though they too had injuries. Samika suffered grievous injuries and lost her memory, remaining in that condition for several weeks.

The painting competition was held before the accident and the results were announced when Samika had lost her memory. Teachers came to the youngster’s house to hand over the trophy but she was in no condition to celebrate.

It took some more weeks for Samika to regain her memory and relish the first prize. Still, she could not move from the bed. Experiencing acute pain, Samika told her father Shafi that he could keep the trophy as he painted better pictures than her. It was Shafi who had taught the initial lessons in art to Samika. “I will draw more paintings and win more awards,” she told him.

Incidentally, Shafi has not yet told Samika that her aunt had died in the accident.

The family lives in a rented house at Mukkattakkal in Ponnani and Shafi is struggling to meet the expenses of Samika’s treatment. He hopes benevolent people would help Samika lead a normal life again and create more paintings of lakes, ponds, birds, trees and the sky.

An account has also been opened in the name of Shafi’s wife Masida at Federal Bank, Ponnani branch where money can be credited. The account number is 13630100150712. IFSC: FDRL0001363. Phone: 7034673271.
