Kaduthuruthy: Two families, with small children, have been living at the neighbour's home for the past 27 days after a landslide partially buried their homes at Kaduthuruthy in Kottayam district last month.
They are awaiting the permission of the geology department to take away the mud and stones in a vehicle. The landslide hit the homes of Girija Manoharan and Sabu Raj during heavy rain on August 7.
The rear side of Girija's house was destroyed, and mud and stones filled her house. Girija, her daughter-in-law Soumya and her two-year-old daughter were at home when the disaster struck. However, they managed to run out of the home in time. The 50 cents of land have been ravaged, and their furniture and washing machine destroyed.
The families are not in a position to return home anytime soon. They have suffered losses to the tune of lakhs of rupees.
A hill behind Sabu Raj's house had collapsed, bringing in a deluge of slush that destroyed the kitchen and filled the house with mud and stones. They had fortunately moved out of the house before the disaster struck.
As the rain continues, there are still threats of landslides. Also, a part of the land has developed a crack, which may collapse at any time.
The land acquisition tehsildar has instructed them to remove the mud from the house and dump it nearby. And then file an application to remove the mud in a vehicle. However, there is not enough space at their premises to dump the mud. Therefore, they want the mud to be taken out in the vehicle.
The families said that they have sought the permission of the geology department for this but were yet to get the approval.
