Bharathapuzha almost dry before summer, may signal a severe drought ahead

Kuttippuram: Bharathapuzha is almost dry much before the summer months, signalling that what could follow is a severe drought.

The river which is usually full during the Malayalam month of thulam (October 17-November 15), hardly had any water last month itself.

The decrease in monsoon rains and showers during the thulam month has led to a significant decrease in the flow of water this year. The next monsoon is more than six months away.

According to locals, the Bharathapuzha river will dry up completely by January if the current situation continues. This will affect many water supply schemes that depend on the river, which is also known as Nila.

Those who depend on the water from Bharathapuzha said temporary bunds will have to be constructed in various parts of the river to alleviate the water shortage.
