Kizhakkambalam: Twenty20 has given Rs 1 lakh to a couple, who were physically assaulted while they turned up to vote at the Kummanode ward in the Kizhakkambalam panchayat of Ernakulam district.

Twenty20 chief coordinator Sabu M Jacob handed over the cash to the couple during a meet held after the results of the local body elections were out on Wednesday.

Wayanad native Printu N A and his wife Bridgette have been residing at a rented accommodation in Kizhakkambalam for the past 14 years.

The local cadre of the LDF and UDF had bullied them, while claiming that those living at rented accommodation will not be allowed to vote.

The youth was assaulted in front of his wife and the woman's clothes were also torn in the melee. Sabu said that the couple should be lauded as they had voted despite the incident.

Sabu had earlier said that CPM independent candidate in the Kummanode ward had contested against the Twenty20 candidate with the backing of the UDF.
