Vismaya case trial: Her father recounts torture and greed of husband, father-in-law

Vismaya case: Probe team yet to confirm if it is suicide or murder
24-year-old BAMS student Vismaya V Nair was found dead at her husband's house during the wee hours of June 21 under mysterious circumstances.

Kollam: "Let the scrap car and waste woman remain here." That was the response Kiran once gave to the family of his wife Vismaya, who later committed suicide.

The details of the torture Vismaya suffered from Kiran over dowry have now been deposed to the court by the deceased's father Thrivikraman Nair.

The bereaved father, who is the first witness in the suicide case of his daughter, was examined at the Kollam Additional Sessions Court-1 on Monday when the trial commenced.

Vismaya had ended her life at Kiran's house at Poruvazhy near Sasthamkottam in Kollam district on June 21, 2021.

Nair told the court that Kiran's father had first demanded dowry while fixing the marriage. He told Kiran's father that he was ready to give 100 sovereigns of gold, 1.2 acres of land, and a car. But due to the COVID-19 crisis, he could give only 80 sovereigns of gold.

On the day prior to the marriage, Kiran told Vismaya that he wanted another car and not the one already bought, Nair said.

He also said that after marriage, her daughter was beaten up by Kiran regularly.

Vismaya was tortured by him by saying that the gold ornaments weighed less compared to what was offered to him by her father when it was taken to the bank for keeping it in the locker.

When Kiran called me over the phone, Vismaya was loudly crying asking me to take her home, Nair said. The audio of the phone call retrieved from Kiran's mobile phone was played at the court

When she was beaten up by Kiran during an Onam trip, she took shelter at a house in Chittumala.

"When my wife and I reached the home of Kiran after this incident, the reply was that all issues could be solved if what had been offered as dowry to her was given fully," Nair said.

He has also accused Kiran of attacking his son Vijith when he came to his house. "An angry Kiran threw the gold chain presented by Vismaya during the marriage at my face and left home, after saying that let the scrap car and waste woman remain here.

"When I was busy discussing with community leaders on the question of divorce, my daughter again went with Kiran. On June 21, Kiran's father called me and said that my daughter was in the hospital."

Nair told the court that he came to know about her daughter's death while he was on the way to the hospital.

Advocates G Mohanraj, Neeravil Anil and B Ashwin appeared for the prosecution while C Pratapan Pillai represented the defence side.
