VD Satheesan's security to be enhanced following SFI activist’s murder in Idukki

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala’s Police Chief has issued instructions to enhance the security of the Opposition Leader V D Satheesan considering the current political situation in the state. According to the order of the Director General of Police (DGP), all district police chiefs have to provide adequate security personnel and pilot as well as escort vehicles to the Opposition Leader.

Moreover, additional police personnel should be present at the programmes attended by Satheesan, adds the DGP. The new measures are in view of the widespread protests witnessed in the state following Monday's murder of Dheeraj Rajendran, a member of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), the students' wing of the ruling party CPM, in Idukki.

Clashes between SFI activists and political rivals, particularly those of the Congress, were reported different parts of Kerala hours after Dheeraj's murder. Activists of the CPM and its youth and student wings took out protest marches across the state, leading to confrontation with Congress activists in some areas.

Incidentally, Satheesan’s security was reduced from ‘Z’ category to ‘Y-Plus’ category in October last year, following which he lost the protection of the pilot vehicle and only had the services of two gunmen.

Reacting to the state government’s decision at that time, Satheesan had said that he was willing to vacate the official residence and return the Opposition Leader’s car if the government demanded them back.
