Thrissur woman, grandchildren hoist Indian flag before thatched house; video spreads widely

Cherpu (Thrissur): When the country marked the Republic Day on Wednesday, a poor family here too tried to celebrate it in their own way. Ammini and her grandchildren hoisted the Indian tricolor in front of their thatched hut.

Amini, 69, wife of Vijayan of Cheruchenam, along with her grandchildren Vismaya, Vivek, Vaiga, Sreelakshmi, Sreenand, Shiv Hari and Shivatmika turned a bamboo stick into a flag post and hoisted the flag.

The video of the flag-hoisting somehow spread on the internet. This act of patriotism was applauded widely and fetched offers of assistance from scores of people. There has been a flurry of calls promising help to the family.

Film director Major Ravi spoke to Ammini's daughter Sowmya over phone and extended help to renovate the house. Many others pledged their support and assistance to the family.

A R Praveen Kumar, the principal of CNN Boys High School, Cherpu, had asked the students to hoist the national flag in front of their houses on Republic Day. School teacher Sushma sent a message to the class group to send the video of flag-hoisting.

As per the instruction, Vivek who is a ninth standard student, took the initiative to hoist the flat in front of their house. When their grandmother raised the flag, granddaughter Vismaya captured the moment on the mobile phone.
