Thiruvananthapuram: A 40-year-old murder accused, who was seriously injured in a drunken brawl between goons, died while undergoing treatment at the Medical College Hospital here. The deceased was Deepu, a native of Pongumoodu on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram city.

Ironically, the same goons, who had helped Deepu to get out on bail a week ago, attacked him with a liquor bottle and stones during a revelry held to celebrate his release from jail. The incident happened at a rented room near Kattayikonam last Wednesday night.

Deepu was left bleeding by the roadside for over 30 minutes before the police arrived to take him to the hospital, after being informed by the people in the area.

The images from a nearby building show Deepu being hit on the head and chest with bottle and stones. The serious head injury was the cause for his death.

Goons Kallikode Stephen, Aruvikkarakonam native Sunil Kumar (Ayiroopara Kuttan, 46); Kilimanoor native Libin Raj, 32; and Sasthavattom native Praveen Kumar (Mojith, 32) have been arrested.

Ayiroopara Kuttan and Stephen, who had lost both his hands while making bombs, had helped Deepu to get bail. Both of them are accused in several cases. All four of them were part of the sand mafia at Kazhakoottam.

As Deepu attacked even his friends if they failed to do his bidding, he was also called as 'Mental Deepu'. He is accused of hacking to death a vegetable seller and attacking a gang member, Sharath Lal, in September 2020. His parents are (late) Shashikumar and Seetha.
