Kochi: The Kunnathunadu police has filed a case against 29 persons, including Twenty20 Chief Coordinator Sabu M Jacob, on the charge of violating COVID-19 protocols during the public homage given to its slain activist Deepu, who was allegedly killed by a group of CPM activists in Kizhakkambalam.

The police also booked a case against thousands of identified people, including Sabu, on the charge of grouping together for attending the funeral of Deepu on Saturday by allegedly violating COVID-19 norms on public activities.

The police had earlier sounded warning that the funeral be conducted by maintaining a strict COVID-19 vigil.

While terming the action as politically motivated, Sabu Jacob said that it was strange that the police took cases against the activists after giving prior permission for conducting the funeral function.

He wanted to know whether the police would take similar cases against Opposition Leader in the Assembly VD Satheesan and former MLA VP Sajeendran, who attended Deepu's funeral.

Deepu, the Twenty20 area secretary of Kizhakkambalam ward No 5, died on Sunday, a few days after a grievous assault allegedly by CPM activists during the 'lights-off protest' conducted on February 12.
