Pregnant woman, husband thrashed for objecting to teasing by hooligans

Arrest

Pala: A pregnant woman was kicked in her abdomen and her husband beaten up by a group of hooligans in Pala after the couple objected to obscene comments and open exhibition of nudity by them on the road.

The incident happened at Njondimakkal Junction in Pala on Thursday at 6.30 pm. Four people, including a workshop owner, have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Poovarani Parapalli Karuthedathu KS Sankar, 39, the workshop owner, Ambara Nirappel Plathottathil Johnson, 38, and labourers Narianganam Chemban Puredathil Anand, 23, and Mevada Veliyathu Suresh, 56, were arrested by the police.

The police are currently investigating whether there is any truth in the claim of Anand that he had no role in the incident.

According to the police, the incident occurred when the man and his wife were walking towards the latter's paternal house, near Njondimakkal Junction, after getting down from the bus. Those who sat at the workshop led by Sankar then passed obscene comments. When the couple pleaded with the accused not to disturb them, the accused started exposing themselves.

The gang then hit the husband on his throat and then pushed him down. Sankar kicked the pregnant woman on her abdomen. The woman, who fell down backward, suffered heavy bleeding. When the couple said that they would complain to the police, Sankar abused them and then tried to ram them with his car.

Later, the woman was admitted to the Pala General Hospital. After being unable to spot the movement of the child during the medical examination, the woman was shifted to the Mar Sleeva Medicity at Cherpunkal.

It was found in the detailed examination at the hospital that the woman had suffered internal bleeding. After three days of full rest, the woman will have to undergo scanning again in order to find out the exact condition of the foetus.

Her husband's neck was dislocated due to the impact of the attack.

The couple are employees of a private hospital in Thodupuzha.

A police team led by Pala Station House Officer KP Thomson arrested the assailants. The accused were later produced before the magistrate court and remanded in judicial custody.
