A joint operation by the police and locals is underway at Kanjirapoil in the district to track down a thief hiding in the forest.

Ashokan, who reportedly stays in a forest spread in about 300 acres across the panchayats of Madikai and Kodombellur is the thief they are after.

The other day Ashokan reportedly attacked a woman during a snatch theft. After the latest incident, the locals decided to intervene.

Manorama News reported that Ashokan had been stealing for several years.

Police squads from Hosdurg and Ambalathara led by Kanhangad DySP are combing the forest area.

The dog squad and drones are also being used in the operation. The locals have also set up a WhatsApp group named 'Kallan Ashokan' (thief Ashokan) to co-ordinate the mission.

The police believe that they have surrounded the region and will be able to nab Ashokan soon.
