Sailor from Alappuzha among 28 crew rescued from cargo ship that sank off Iran coast

Dubai: A sailor from Kerala was among those who escaped from a Dubai-based cargo ship that sank off the Iranian coast a few days ago. The sailor, Mithun (31), is the son of Puthiyidath Ponnappan, residing near Holy Angels School at Edathua in Alappuzha district.

It was Mithun's brother Mithu, who works in Dubai, who conveyed the good news to the family in Alappuzha. Mithu was informed about Mithun's rescue by the captain of another ship owned by Mithun’s company. Mithun could not contact anybody as his phone was lost when the ship sank.

The ship had a crew of 30, of whom 28 were rescued and a search was on for the remaining two. Apart from Mithun, details of other crew members were unavailable.

The ship, belonging to Al Makrani Cargo Company in Dubai, was carrying cars from Port Rashid in Dubai to Umm Qasr in Iraq when it met with the accident.
