Thiruvananthapuram: Acting under the request of the Kerala police, the prosecution wing of the State Government has filed applications in various courts for cancelling the bail of around 1,400 goons in Kerala.
ADGP Manoj Abraham said that the decision to cancel their bail was taken since the criminal acts by the goons are continuing unabated even after the introduction of 'Operation Kaval' four months ago. Operation Kaval is a special drive launched by the Kerala Police to curb drug trafficking, sand smuggling, contraband and gang attacks with a view to nab and prosecute the culprits.
The bail of 64 goons was cancelled. As many as 2,893 criminals are yet to be caught by the police. Of this, 629 persons belonged to Thiruvananthapuram district.
As per the police estimate, there are around 7,953 goons in the State. Most of them are under police surveillance. Most number of goons are from Kottayam (1,255) followed by Thiruvananthapuram (1,008).
The names of 1,393 goons were recently added to the list. Most of the new entrants in the list are from Kottayam (178), Pathanamthitta (177), Thiruvananthapuram rural (138) and Thiruvananthapuram city (103).
Though the police forwarded proposals to the respective District Collectors for keeping 122 criminals under preventive detention for six months, orders have not been issued in majority of the cases.
Though requests were given to the range IGs for deporting 99 goons to other districts, orders were issued in only four cases.
Recently, the Thiruvananthapuram District Collector refused to act on the police request to keep an accused in preventive detention. But later, we saw the same criminal murdering a hotel receptionist in the city.
DGP refuses to act against cops based on media reports
DGP (Law and Order) Ani Kant has ordered that no disciplinary action should be taken against the policemen merely on the basis of adverse media reports.
The DGP, in his order issued to the range IGs and Superintendents of Police, has said that though there is a circular already in force against the practice, it is being noticed that many police officers are taking disciplinary action against their subordinates based on media reports.
The order was issued as per the decision of the Police Staff Council meeting.
The range IGs and those in-charge of Vigilance, Special Branch and Crime Branch also gave such an instruction to their subordinates.
It is learnt that the decision was taken as per the request of the office-bearers of the pro-CPM police officers' organisation.
