Thrissur: The Thrissur Additional District and Sessions Court has rejected the bail plea of the four CPM activists, who were arrested in connection with the death of Twenty20 activist C K Deepu in Kizhakkambalam last month.

The case was earlier heard by the Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court. But the High Court later transferred the case to Thrissur on finding that the Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court failed to act as per the provisions of the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act in the case.

Deepu was assaulted by a group of CPM activists in the wake of Twenty20 holding a ‘lights out’ protest on February 12, from 7pm to 7.15pm, after KSEB denied the party permission to organise a donation drive called ‘Street Light Challenge’ in Kizhakkambalam and nearby grama panchayats.

Twenty20 alleged that Kunnathunadu CPM MLA P V Srinijin was instrumental in sabotaging the project.

Deepu, despite suffering grievous internal injury from the attack, was scared and kept mum about his pain. He was rushed to the hospital only a couple of days after, when he vomited blood.

At first, Deepu was taken to the nearby Pazhanganad Hospital. Later, he was shifted to Rajagiri Hospital in Aluva. Though an emergency surgery was conducted, he had to be put on ventilator support. Deepu succumbed to his injuries on February 18.
