Thiruvananthapuram: Thunderstorms, accompanied with lightning, are likely to occur at isolated places in Kerala in the next three days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). A cyclonic circulation persists over the southeast Arabian Sea and the adjoining southwest Arabian Sea.
The public has been asked to exercise caution as lightning can lead to injuries or loss of life. Also, cause damage to electrical and communication network, and household electrical appliances.
Move to a safe building as soon as you notice the first signs of a thunderstorm. Being in open spaces increases the risk of getting struck by lightning.
Close all windows and doors, if there are indications of strong wind and lightning. Do not stand close to doors and windows. Sit on a chair or bed inside the building, and avoid contact with the floor and walls. Disconnect power supply to home appliances and avoid proximity to electrical equipment.
In case of a thunderstorm while you are travelling, sit inside the vehicle itself. During a thunderstorm, do not go to the terrace or courtyard to pick clothes, that have been hung out for drying. Do not collect water from pipes.
Also do not step into water bodies for taking bath or fishing during thunderstorms, the State Disaster Management Authority has cautioned.
