Thiruvananthapuram: With the list of hospitals providing free treatment yet to be completed, the implementation of Medicep medical insurance scheme for the state government employees and pensioners has been postponed to May.

The present hurdle has been caused due to the reluctance of some of the big private hospitals in Thiruvananthapuram to join the scheme. Changes are also currently being made in the data of 11 lakh persons and their family members provided as part of the scheme.

An exclusive software is also being developed for the insurance scheme and the work is under progress. At a meeting convened by finance minister K N Balagopal, the insurance company representatives informed that it would take at least a month to complete all these formalities.

At the meeting it was pointed out that four big hospitals in Thiruvananthapuram were still reluctant to be part of the insurance scheme. The list of hospitals in all other districts barring Thiruvananthapuram have been finalised.

These four big hospitals have stayed away from the scheme citing that the rate fixed by the government for various treatments was very low. Meanwhile, Rs 500 each would be deducted from the salary and pension from May as the premium for the insurance scheme.
