The passengers of a car, including two children, had a narrow escape from a wild elephant at Thirunelli here Saturday night.

PT Nidheesh and friends of Appapara near Thirunelli were driving home from Nagamana when a wild elephant appeared on the road near Akkollikunnu Colony.

The incident was caught on a camera fixed inside the car and has since gone viral.

From the footage, a tusker can be seen charging toward the vehicle on the narrow road. The driver kept the lights on while children began crying. The tusker appeared to return but it kept charging again.

Nidheesh later said that they remained still and told the children to stay quiet and that decision might have saved their lives.

It is understood that the natives of Thirunelli encounter wild elephants often. The fencing system set up by the forest department has not been effective, it is alleged.

In one month, eight persons in Wayanad suffered injuries on the road from wild boar attacks.
