Chinnakanal (Munnar): In yet another instance of wild animals taking the lives of humans in and around Munnar, a man was killed by a rogue elephant at Chinnakanal in Idukki district on Wednesday morning.

Babu, 60, of Kripa Bhavan at Thiruvallur Colony was killed by the wild elephant around 6 am. The incident took place near his house. The elephant, known as Chakkakomban, lifted Babu's left hand and then banged him on the ground. He died on the spot.

The rogue elephant was roaming in the locality for the last few days.

Babu landed before the elephant when he was returning home after alerting his neighbour, who goes for farming everyday in the morning, to be careful since the elephant is frequenting the area.

The enraged local people took the body of Babu to the office of the Forest Department at Chinnakanal and laid siege to the office, alleging laxity on the part of the officials in taking proper steps to curb the increasing instances of wildlife attacks on human beings.

Babu is survived by his wife Santhi and children Sasikala and Sasikumar.
