Thiruvananthapuram: A spell of heavy rain and high-speed winds claimed one life and inflicted heavy losses in Kerala on Wednesday.

Kanhangad block Congress president D V Balakrishnan died after an electric wire, which came loose when high-speed winds and rain lashed the region, coiled around his neck while he was riding a scooter.

Though he was rushed to the hospital, he couldn't be saved.

The high-speed winds in the region saw roofs blown off several houses.

Crop losses were also reported in the state.

Yellow alert in 2 districts

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a yellow alert in two districts - Ernakulam and Pathanamthitta.

Thunderstorm warnings have also been issued in all districts except Kasaragod for the next five days.

Though IMD has ruled out the formation of a depression over the Arabian Sea for the next 120 hours, it has predicted scattered low and medium clouds with embedded moderate to intense convection lay over southeast Arabian Sea and the Comorin area.

There will also be scattered low and medium clouds with embedded weak to moderate convection lay over the north Arabian sea, and east-central Arabian sea off south Maharashtra coast.

Public have been directed to exercise caution.
