Restaurant that served costly breakfast to MLA reduces rates for 'appam', egg roast

Alappuzha MLA and CPM district secretariat member PP Chitharanjan

Alappuzha: The hotel, which ran into controversy after CPM leader and Alappuzha MLA PP Chitharanjan accused it of overcharging him for breakfast, has finally reduced the rates of "appam" and egg roast.

The hotel situated at Kanichukulangara near Cherthala reduced the rate of "appam" to Rs 10 per piece from the earlier rate of Rs 15 and single egg roast to Rs 40 from Rs 50.

Earlier, Chitharanjan had given a complaint to Alappuzha District Collector Dr Renu Raj against the hotel for fleecing him. But the Collector expressed her inability to take action against the hotel, saying that there was no specific rule to intervene in the matter.

It all began when Chitharanjan put up a social media post last week after he was slapped with a bill of Rs 184  by the hotel for five 'appams' and egg curry for breakfast.

"An appam that might fly off the plate if the fan moved at a high speed cost Rs 15.  For adding a bit of gravy over an egg which cost Rs 4.5, they charged Rs 50. It was not a star hotel. AC was not working even though it is advertised as an AC hotel. The menu isn't displayed.

"In some hotels, Rs 100 is charged for a vegetarian meal having two curries. It all happens when some local hotels still sell tea for Rs 5 and a meal for Rs 30," the MLA said in his post.

The post went viral. Soon, a controversy broke out with KPCC vice-president VT Balaram accusing Chithranjan of fleeing from the hotel without paying the bill and then creating an issue.
