Sreesanth plans to move court after being booked for extorting Rs 18 lakh by promising villa

Kannur: Former India cricketer S Sreesanth has rubbished allegations of fraud against him and said he plans to move court to clear his name. The Town Police here had registered a case against Sreesanth and others for allegedly extorting Rs 18 lakh from a native of Kannapuram by promising a villa in Udupi.

“I would like to address a matter that requires clarification. There is currently false information being spread about me. I want to emphasize that these claims are completely unfounded, and I have no involvement with them whatsoever,” posted Sreesanth on X, also called Twitter.

“I have no involvement with them whatsoever. It is truly disheartening to witness individuals attempting to amplify this situation into something significant. I assure you that legal action will be taken against these person (sic).”

Sreesanth added that he has “not engaged in any financial transactions or any other activities at all”. The police case was registered at the direction of the Kannur First Class Magistrate Court where the complainant filed a petition.

According to the complaint, two persons -- Rajeev Kumar and Venkatesh Kini -- who met the complainant in 2019, took money from him promising five cents and a villa on it. The complainant said that when there was no development on the assurances given, he was told Sreesanth was starting a cricket project on the said land.

Later, Sreesanth met the complainant and promised to build him a villa as part of his project, stated the complaint. The complainant said he had not heard from Sreesanth or the others since that meeting, which forced him to approach the court.
