Ernakulam: A wild elephant fell into a well on a private property at Placherry in Kottapady village on Thursday night. Villagers spotted the animal on Friday morning and informed forest department officials.

Efforts are underway to rescue the elephant from the shallow, square-shaped well, situated around 15 km from Kothamangalam.

The incident sparked a protest by the villagers who demanded a solution to the frequent wild animal raids in Kothamangalam Taluk. The police have imposed a prohibitory order as the situation escalated due to  villagers' stir.

According to reports, the well supplies drinking water to 20 families in the vicinity. The property owner has demanded that officials restore the well to its previous condition and provide drinking water to the families till it is made usable.
