Wayanad: The Wayanad District Congress Committee (DCC) has expressed its support for Sulthan Bathery MLA IC Balakrishnan in response to the allegations made by the CPM and other LDF allies. In a press release issued on Monday, the DCC announced plans to resist any attempts to target Balakrishnan by organising a public meeting and mass rally at Sulthan Bathery on January 4 to protest against the CPM's campaign.

The CPM's agitation against Balakrishnan follows allegations of financial irregularities tied to the suicide of DCC treasurer N M Vijayan and his son. The DCC has called for a thorough investigation into their deaths, a move which has been supported by IC Balakrishnan, who has formally requested an investigation from the District Superintendent of Police.

Following Vijayan's death, a document surfaced claiming that he had received nearly Rs 30 lakh from a person, which was reportedly handed over to Balakrishnan, the then DCC president, with a promise to secure a job for his son at one of the Congress-controlled cooperative banks in the district. CPM has alleged that these corrupt dealings led to the pressure that drove Vijayan to take his own life. The party has demanded Balakrishnan's resignation and organised a protest march to his office in Sulthan Bathery on Monday.

In response, Congress leaders have accused the CPM of using the tragedy to advance a malicious campaign. A Congress statement rejected the allegations, asserting that those who knew NM Vijayan would dismiss such claims as baseless. The statement highlighted that Vijayan had served the party and local administrative systems for years and could have resolved any financial issues. The corruption allegations against IC Balakrishnan date back to 2021, when they were investigated and dismissed by the party's state leadership, according to DCC.

Meanwhile, a special police team under District Police Chief Taposh Basumatari has begun recording statements from N M Vijayan's relatives, Congress leaders, and others involved in the corruption allegations. The investigation is being led by DySP Abdul Shareef from Sulthan Bathery.
