New Delhi/Thrissur: The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed on Friday that Thrissur native Jayin Kurien, who was injured in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, is under treatment in Moscow. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal added that at least 126 Indian nationals were part of the Russian Armed Forces.
"He (Jayin Kurien) is receiving treatment in a hospital in Moscow. The embassy is in touch with him and his family regarding his welfare, and we hope he will return to India soon after his treatment," said Randhir Jaiswal.
Additionally, Jaiswal updated that "as of today, there have been 126 cases of Indian nationals serving in the Russian Army. Of these, 96 have returned to India and been discharged from the Russian Armed Forces. Eighteen Indian nationals remain in the Russian Army, and the whereabouts of 16 of them are unknown. The Russian side has categorized them as missing... We are seeking their early release and repatriation. Twelve Indian nationals have died while serving in the Russian Army."
The MEA had earlier confirmed the death of another Malayali, Binil (32), a native of Kuttanellur, Thrissur, who had been working for the Russian Army. Jayin, Binil, and a few others had travelled to Russia through an agent based in Chalakudy. The group initially recruited to work in a canteen, found themselves caught in the war zone starting in June last year. They later recorded a video appealing for assistance to return home. Their companion, Sandeep, a native of Thrikkur, was also killed in the conflict.
