Kannur: Sharanya, the 22-year-old mother who killed her one-and-a-half-year-old son in 2020, attempted suicide on the day of her trial at the Taliparamba court on Monday.
The accused consumed poison after checking into a hotel room near the Kozhikode railway station. She was found by the hotel staff and immediately rushed her to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment.
In the incident on February 17, 2020, Sharanya, a native of Thayyil in Kannur, killed her child by throwing him off the rocks of Thayyil beach to be with her lover. When the child went missing, his father, Pranav, filed a police complaint. After a search by locals and the cops, the body was found on the sea wall 50 meters away from the house. An injury to the head after hitting a hard surface was the cause of death, as per the post-mortem report.
The accused was arrested after two days of police questioning. Her husband Pranav was also grilled by the cops, though it turned out he had no role in the crime. Sharanya’s arrest was recorded after a forensic examination proved the presence of salinity on her clothes. The investigation revealed that her desire to be with her lover prompted Sharanya to kill her child.
