Alappuzha: The state cabinet on Tuesday decided to recommend the remission of sentence to the first accused in the Cherianadu Bhaskara Karanavar murder case to the governor. The decision was taken based on the Advisory Committee meeting held on August 8, 2024, at the Kannur Women's Prison & Correctional Home and the opinion of the Law Department. There are three more accused in the case.

Bhaskara Karanavar (66) was murdered by his daughter-in-law, Sherin, and her associates over a dispute involving his will and her illegal dealings on 8 November 2018. The police quickly uncovered inconsistencies in the crime scene, including the lack of forced entry and missing valuables, leading them to suspect an inside job.

The investigation revealed that Sherin had conspired with contract killers, whom she had contacted through her links with hawala operators and social media. She committed the crime after Karanavar removed her as the beneficiary of a substantial bank deposit. Sherin's role in the crime was confirmed by her phone records and evidence of her attempts to destroy evidence. All accused, including Sherin, were sentenced to life imprisonment, and the Supreme Court had upheld the decision despite her appeals.
