Kottayam: A police officer died on Monday after being assaulted during an altercation with a repeat offender at a roadside eatery in Ettumanoor. The deceased is Shyam Prasad (44), a driver at the Kottayam West Police Station.
He was repeatedly assaulted by accused Jibin George (27) after he confronted the latter for creating a ruckus in front of the eatery at the Caritas Junction, Thellokam, reported Manorama News. 

Shyam was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital around 2 am but succumbed to his injuries by 4 am. Ettumanoor police immediately reached the spot and took Jibin into custody. Initial reports suggested that Shyam died of excessive internal bleeding.

After inquest procedures, the body will be transferred to Kottayam Medical College for post-mortem and will later be handed over to his family.
