Kalpetta: Hundreds of survivors in the Mundakkai-Chooralmala landslide are all set to launch a series of agitations against the state government, raising a slew of issues.

Their demands include allotting 10 cents land each to the families at the Elston Estate near Kalpetta for the families instead of the 5 cents offered by the state government, giving employment to all 17 persons, the lone survivors of the families in the government, spending the entire fund in the CMDRF (Chief Minister's Disaster Relief Fund) for the survivors and write off loans availed by the families in the landslide-hit zones.

The state government had initially promised 10 cents of land for each family and government jobs for the lone survivors of the families. The state government had identified as many as 242 families to allot houses in the first phase of the township project.

The two parcels of land to be acquired for the rehabilitation of the victims were 60.41 hectares land of Harrisons Malayalam Plantation (HML)in the Nedumpala division at Arappatta and Elston Estate land (78.73 hectors) at the Pulpara division near the Kalpetta by-pass.

The government stated that only five cents of land would be given to the families at the Elston Estate land near Kalpetta, whereas, at HML land at Nedumpala, 10 cents of land would be given to each allotted family.

There are two organisations of landslide survivors, the Janashabdam and the Mundakkai-Chooralmala Landslide Survivors Action Council. Both organisations will go on protests against the state government in the coming days citing undue delay in executing the project and failure in keeping the promises.

The Janashabdam would organise an agitation in the landslide-hit area, making huts on the land as a protest against the state government on Sunday, whereas the Mundakkai-Chooralmala Landslide Survivors Action Council would launch an agitation by organising a hunger strike in front of the Collectorate on Monday.

Leader of the Action Council Naseer Alakkkan said that they were reluctant to go into agitation mode, but now they have been forced by the lethargy of the state government in resolving the issues they faced. " The CM told us we would give you 10 cents, then the Chief Secretary told us we would give you 10 cents. Now they say only 5 cents would be given at Elston Estate.

"What we demand is that all the families should be given 10 cents of land wherever it is. Moreover, the funds diverted for us through CMDRF funds should be utilised only for the Chooralmala-Mundakkai survivors," they said.
