Thiruvananthapuram: A Health department committee report stated that although Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Urology head Dr Haris Chirakkal’s public response was a violation of regulations, no action should be taken against him.
The report stated that Dr Haris’ allegations are not entirely accurate.
The committee assessed that the system's shortcomings are causing difficulties for patients. The report highlights the delay in the process for the purchase of equipment and the slow pace of repairs at the hospital. Bureaucratic delays in the Urology department, as well as the failings pointed out by other department heads, are also mentioned in the report.
The committee recommended simplifying the procedure and granting the heads of institutions greater financial autonomy. The report will be handed over to the health minister on Thursday.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Dr Haris said that the purpose of his post was to criticise the bureaucracy and not the health department.
Dr Haris expressed happiness that his post helped patients. "Patients, whose surgeries were postponed, came and thanked me. Their smiles are the greatest reward," he said.
The head of the Urology department said that he is expecting a suspension. "I am ready to face any action. I have handed over responsibilities to my junior doctors. I know that the measure I took was not correct, but I had no other option," Dr Haris added.
KGMCTA warns of strike
In a letter to health minister Veena George, the Kerala Government Medical College Teachers' Association (KGMCTA) said that medical college doctors will go on strike if action is taken against Dr Haris Chirakkal.
