ATM shutdown leaves Kovilkadavu residents at mercy of private agents

Idukki: With the only ATM in Kovilkadavu out of service for several days, residents have raised concerns over the lack of action to restore its operations. The ATM, run by a public sector bank, has been non-functional for over a week. In the absence of local banking facilities, residents are forced to rely on private agencies for money transfer services. Customers say these agencies charge a service fee of ₹10 for every ₹1,000 transferred.
Bank officials explained that the delay in restoring the ATM is due to pending contract renewal with the agency responsible for its maintenance. Kovilkadavu, a small township situated between Marayur and Kanthalloor, attracts a steady stream of people, including many from nearby tribal settlements, who come to purchase essential goods. The next ATM nearer is in Marayur, 5km away to the north of Kovilkadavu. The other one is 10 km south in Kanthalloor. Both are Union Bank ATMs.
With the ATM out of service, these residents now have no option but to depend on private agencies, adding to their financial burden. Residents have urged the authorities to intervene and resume ATM services without further delay.
