Kottayam: In view of the increased otter attacks on riverine community in Kerala in recent times, the government has decided to conduct a census of the animals. The move comes after several people are injured in otter attacks and ascertaining the facts and figures of this pressing issue has become imperative.
The otter census will be conducted in August. The Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences, the Forest Department, and the Water Resources Development and Utilization Centre are jointly conducting the census. The Forest Department says the number of otters in Meenachil and Manimala rivers has increased.
The Forest Department informed that the census will be carried out by examining footprints and collecting information from the public. The census will be held on August 30 and 31.
Last month, as many as four clam collectors from Panavally sustained injuries after being attacked by otters while working in the Vembanad Lake.
Meanwhile, over 20 people, including clam collectors, fishermen, and even residents washing clothes by the lakeside, were bitten by otters last year. Although the fisheries department was alerted, no significant follow-up action has been taken so far.
