Wayanad: In a novel initiative, the Kerala Police Association (KPA) has constructed houses for three police personnel who lost their homes and land in the devastating landslide that struck Mundakkai and Chooralmala on the night of July 30 last year.
By pooling ₹100 per member per house, KPA successfully mobilised ₹68 lakh to fund the construction of three new homes. The keys to the houses, located at Palakkamoola near Meenangadi, were handed over on Tuesday by ADGP S Sreejith. Each home spans 1,300 square feet and was built entirely with contributions from KPA members.
The beneficiaries are Civil Police Officer Anas (Kalpetta police station), Bincia Nasrine (Meppadi police station), and Civil Police Officer Shihabudheen (Kenichira police station).
Kerala Police Association district secretary Irshad Munarack said the 27 cents of land for the three homes was purchased by the Kerala Police Housing Co-operative Society, based in Ernakulam, which has over 33,000 members.
“There was no compulsion to contribute. While some officers opted out, the overwhelming majority supported the cause,” Irshad added.
Kerala Police Association state president A Suheer Khan presided over the handover function. Kannur Range DIG Yathish Chandra, Wayanad SP Taposh Basumatari and other senior officers were also present.
