Kottayam: Kottayam is taking steps to join the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities, a flagship initiative by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) aimed at promoting lifelong learning and inclusive education.
According to MP Francis George, a formal proposal has been submitted to the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), nominating Kottayam for inclusion in the global network. The initiative was first announced by the MP during the MP Meet hosted by Manorama shortly after his election.
The application, prepared and submitted by the Kottayam Municipality, outlines the city’s strong credentials for earning the Learning City tag — including its historic distinction as the first Indian city to achieve 100% literacy, and its significant contributions to publishing and education.
The proposal showcases Kottayam’s literary and cultural legacy, highlighting institutions like Malayala Manorama, the Sahitya Pravarthaka Cooperative Society, and the Akshara Museum (Museum of Letters).
“After thoroughly reviewing the application and supporting documents, the Human Resource Development Ministry has forwarded it to UNESCO for consideration,” said Francis George.
Thrissur, Malappuram already in network
Kerala already has two cities — Thrissur and Nilambur — on UNESCO’s Learning Cities list. Globally, 356 cities from 76 countries are part of the network, which also includes Warangal in Telangana from India.
