CPI leader P Palanivel passes away; Idukki district conference rescheduled

Munnar: Senior CPI leader and prominent trade unionist P Palanivel passed away early on Thursday, around 6 am. He was undergoing treatment for kidney-related ailments at Rajagiri Hospital in Kochi, where he later developed pneumonia, leading to his demise.
Palanivel, a key figure in the plantation workers’ movement in Munnar, served as the Assistant Secretary of the CPI Idukki District Committee and was also a former President of the Idukki District Panchayat. At the time of his passing, he was serving as the General Secretary of the Devikulam Estate Workers’ Union. He had led several major struggles in support of plantation workers' rights.
A public homage will be held at the CPI office in Munnar from 9 am to 1 pm on Friday. He is survived by his wife Jabakhani, and children Murukanandan (Balu), Jayalakshmi, and V Sonandini.
CPI district conference postponed
In the wake of Palanivel's demise, all CPI Idukki district conference events scheduled for Thursday and Friday have been postponed. District Secretary K Salimkumar confirmed that the representative session of the conference will now begin on July 19.
