Kottayam: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will formally inaugurate a memorial meeting on Friday marking the second death anniversary of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in Puthuppally, party leaders said.

Organised by the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), the event is expected to begin at 10 am and is expected to draw thousands of supporters, local leaders, and members of Chandy’s family, they added.

Rahul, who is also the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, will begin the day by laying flowers at Chandy's grave at St George Church in Puthuppally, PTI reported.

Following the ceremony, he will formally inaugurate the memorial gathering, the party said.

As part of the programme, Rahul will also hand over the keys to 12 newly built houses for the poor, constructed by the Oommen Chandy Foundation, and launch a new charitable initiative named 'Smrititharangam'.

The project continues Chandy’s earlier initiative, which provided hearing aids to hundreds of children during his tenure as chief minister.
